Staff Physicist - Barium Technology Development
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
We are looking for an Experimental Physicist with experience in transforming complex atomic physics experiments into practical applications. As a member of the engineering and technology organization, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers whose mission is to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. You’ll be a technical contributor on the team responsible for demonstration of high-fidelity gate operations on our next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers.
Responsibilities:
- Experimentally demonstrate high-performance quantum gate operations in Barium trapped ions
- Closely collaborate with the system architecture and theory teams in the experimental validation of models of qubit performance
- Demonstrate new capabilities for gate operations and qubit control
- Improve the performance of prototype trapped ion quantum computers in fidelity and stability
You’d be a good fit with:
- PhD in experimental physics or related field, with deep knowledge of atomic physics
- Experience designing, characterizing and operating complex trapped ion or neutral atom systems and experiments
- Demonstrated experimental experience with one or more of the following specialities: ultracold atomic physics, ion trapping, laser spectroscopy, or precision spectroscopy
- 4+ years of relevant post-PhD experience
You’d be a great fit with:
- Experience working with ion traps and measurements on trapped ions
- Experience in quantum computing, atomic clocks, or quantum sensing
- Experience in best practices for software control and data acquisition of complex experiments (git, version control, time-series databases)
- Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product based on detailed technical requirements
- 7+ years of relevant post-PhD experience in industry
