The salary range for this position is $133,046 - $174,192.

We are looking for a Staff Physicist with expertise in trapped-ion quantum computing. As a Staff Physicist in the Research and Development department of IonQ, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. In this role, you’ll lead the system design, integration, and performance characterization of IonQ’s next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the hardware architecture of our next generation quantum computers.
  • Lead the subsystem development and integration by collaborating with the engineering and software teams. 
  • Measure and analyze data on the performance of a trapped ion quantum computer.
  • Mentor physicists and engineers in taking assembled hardware from the initial stages of ion trapping to coherent gate operations. 

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics with expertise in quantum computing with trapped ions or neutral atoms. 
  • 5+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications in journals. 
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.

 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Expertise in quantum networking using trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • 7+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Proficient in developing RF trap waveforms for coherent shuttling of ions.  
  • Served as a principal investigator or technical lead in the development of trapped-ion quantum computers. 
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product. 

 

Location:

This position is located in our newest facility in Bothell, WA.

 

The base pay component of the offer will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland which is only a 15-minute metro ride from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area. Depending on the position, you may be required to be located near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, or Toronto.
