Senior System Operations Manager
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are looking for a Senior System Operations Manager to manage the team that keeps our quantum computers up and running for our customers worldwide and improves resilience and reliability throughout the stack. In this role, you’ll maintain and improve the throughput and performance of our fleet, as well as build tools to make it progressively easier to manage our computers. Don’t hesitate to apply if you haven’t kept quantum computers running before–few managers have. A background in AMO physics, experimental physics, or any deep physics field would make you well-suited for this role.
The ideal candidate is curious about technology and will strive to keep your technical knowledge sharp while remaining comfortable knowing their greatest impact won’t be as an individual contributor.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of system operators and resilience engineers maintaining and improving our quantum computers and platform
- Effectively manage multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, deliverables, and product roadmaps
- Collaborate and communicate with customers, engineers, physicists, external vendors, and other engineering managers
- Manage costs, inventory, and schedules across our operations
- Hire, develop, and retain talent globally
- Help define and manage key performance metrics for the team
You’d be a good fit with:
- Bachelor or Bachelor’s degree in Physics, or related field
- Some experience in a general-purpose programming languages like Go, JavaScript, and Python (multiple programming languages a plus)
- 5+ years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience
- Able to identify and socialize design flaws within production systems
- Able (and excited) to mentor early career physicists
- Exposure to Operational Excellence in systems and/or Learning From Incidents (LFI)
You’d be a great fit with:
- Masters or PhD in AMO physics
- 10+ years of technical leadership and people management experience
- Direct experience in Reliability/Resilience Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience with distributed on-call operations
- Prior experience with quantum computing
- A strong affinity for DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, and/or Learning From Incidents (LFI) concepts
Location: This position can be remote or hybrid from one of our offices in Bothell, WA or College Park, MD.
The approximate base salary range for this position is $187,358 - $245,300.
Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, a quick 15-minute metro from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, or Toronto.
