Product Manager, Quantum Computing

Location: Seattle, Washington

Team: Product

Type: Full-Time

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a highly capable and independent Product Manager to help define the future of Quantum Computing. As a member of the Product organization, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

Product Management in Quantum Computing is no different from any other field, with the exciting difference that you get to be among the first people in history to ever build it. Quantum Computers and all related systems rely on cutting edge technologies across diverse engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, software, optical, material, chemical, all the way down to quantum mechanics. Having interest and experience in these fields will serve you well at IonQ, but we don’t expect you to be an expert, or even uniquely educated for this position.

You mostly need to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, work well with highly specialized experts, and manage a coherent point of view of what’s important to our end-users - researchers, engineers and data-center operators. This is a truly unique opportunity to make a significant impact on IonQ’s market success and drive the broader quantum computing industry as it transitions from a vision into reality.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish a solid understanding of the customer base, its needs, and its priorities.
  • Immerse yourself in IonQ’s engineering implementation challenges and considerations.
  • Combine both sets of considerations (listed above) to define product requirements and document them with clarity in Product Requirements Documents per system/component.
  • Collaborate with multiple engineering teams to navigate implementation challenges.
  • Maintain close relationships with our sales team and directly with customers, represent their needs in team discussion and advocate for solutions that will delight our most demanding customers.
  • Navigate ambiguity and collaborate with the broader team to define long-term roadmaps, milestones and risk mitigation plans for products in your domain.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and business teams to set pricing, review business models/positioning and understand the competitive pressures around your product(s).
  • Keep a constant eye on the market and maintain flexibility about the evolving needs.

You’d be a good fit if you...

  • Have significant past experience managing complex hardware/software products in nascent markets (where the needs are not well defined yet)
  • Are comfortable dealing with advanced technologies, even if you have clear knowledge gaps, while collaborating with a broad range of engineering experts and scientists to achieve product goals
  • Are capable of organizing requirements and priorities despite ambiguity, drive results, and form plans for validating product ideas that offer clarity
  • Have experience working on products that include embedded systems (ideally multiple such systems that work in concert), and all of the associated operational software tools.
  • Have experience working on products that are part of the ecosystem that resides in data centers and you understand the requirements for products to operate in that environment.
  • Enjoy and have practice in collaborating on the maturation of deep R&D work iteratively into products.

You’d be a great fit if you...

  • Have basic experience and/or understanding of quantum computing hardware and/or software (again, not a must)
  • Have practical or theoretical experience with diverse engineering disciplines, including computer science, mechanical, electrical, optical, material, chemical, etc.
  • Have product or engineering level understanding of the structure and operations of severs, data centers, and/or High Performance Computing solutions
  • Have product or engineering level understanding of Cloud computing, web-based management consoles, and online tools
  • Have any level of experience with software development tools, compilers, and code optimizers
  • Have any level of experience with processor design and related electrical engineering design and implementation practices.
