Technical Manager, Integrated Devices

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. We are looking for an Integrated Devices Manager. As an Integrated Devices Manager, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of physicists and engineers focused on the development of chip-scale devices and trapped-ion-control techniques for quantum computing
  • Manage projects aimed at design, fabrication, packaging, and/or characterization of ion trap chips and trap-integrated technology, as well as trapped-ion-control techniques
  • Develop project timelines, identifying key decision dates and completion dates
  • Ensure appropriate personnel is in place along with required materials, supplies and equipment to ensure timely completion of each project milestone
  • Assist with personnel schedules and requirements, and work within the Integrated Devices department and closely with various other departments to make recruitment decisions
  • Develop strategy and tactical plans for integrated-device technology and trapped-ion system development
  • Interface with other team leads across the company to align strategy, tactics, and goals
  • Provide regular constructive feedback to direct reports and upper management
  • Manage, motivate, and encourage Integrated Devices staff within a high-paced ever-changing environment

You’d be a good fit with: 

  • Bachelors or higher in Physics or Engineering
  • 5+ years experience in managing an engineering team with diverse skill sets
  • Experience in managing projects to deliver the technical/product goals and meet timelines within budget
  • Strong technical background in engineering or physics, with a focus on research and development 
  • Effective communication skills with a technical team and other parts of the organization

You’d be a great fit with a: 

  • PhD in Physics or Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in industry managing a team focused on setting and meeting technical goals and deadlines for product delivery
  • Strong background and experience in quantum systems, AMO physics and related optical technology, integrated photonics and electronics, and/or microfabrication and design, packaging, and test of chip-scale devices
  • Proven ability to lead and influence a high-performance and diverse team
  • Exceptional communication skill set across all levels of an organization

Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle, and Boston metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.
