We are looking for a Technician - Opto-Electrical to support our research and development activities. As a Technician - Opto-Electrical, you’ll be part of a diverse multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and physicists whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. In this role you will be hands-on, supporting the build and maintenance of both experimental as well as first-of-a-kind quantum hardware to support our research and development activities. You’ll support a wide variety of efforts and system scale, ranging from one-off test and characterization systems to full technology demonstrators.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the build, assembly, integration, and test of laser and fiber optics, electronics, and mechanical sub-assemblies​​
  • Utilize and suggest modifications to blueprints, drawings, manuals, handbooks and technical specifications
  • Install and integrate wiring, and termination in accordance with systems requirements
  • Incoming inspection of hardware and mechanical sub-assemblies
  • Create test plans and procedures
  • Troubleshoot as well as conduct failure analysis of electro-optical-mechanical systems to improve process and design; Organize and analyze data and document results.
  • Assist with lab organization and safety procedures
  • Support equipment calibration and metrology
  • Perform simple tests such as continuity checks

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Associate's degree in a related field of study: physics, electrical and/or mechanical engineering, laser optics, and photonics; related experience may be considered in lieu of required education
  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting with measurement equipment, hand tools, and power tools
  • Ability to use and interpret signal generators, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power meters, etc.
  • Familiarity with circuits and wiring assemblies
  • Basic skills in assembly, soldering, and connectors
  • Knowledge of proper ESD and cleanroom procedures
  • Labeling, packaging and palletizing experience a plus
  • Experience with harnessing or IPC certifications (E.g. IPC-A-600, -610, and/or -620)
  • Ability to work effectively with a strong work ethic and close attention to detail in a fast-paced dynamic team environment with constantly evolving roles and responsibilities
  • Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc)

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Experience with some or all of the following: opto-electrical systems, lasers, or trapped ion systems
  • Experience with laser setup/checkout, optical alignment, fiber coupling, and common optical test equipment
  • Experience with optical-mechanical assemblies and subassemblies, build, and integration
  • Experience with software-hardware integration and data acquisition systems

Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle, and Boston metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.
